TASTE TEST #3: Miss Fresh

For whatever reason, I was most looking forward to Miss Fresh. Maybe it's the name - I don't know, but...well....it wasn't as grand as I thought it would be - in many ways.

Each meal was wrapped in a plastic bag (which we all know I don't love) and it came with a baguette, which I thought was pretty cool - no other meals came with accompanying bread. It also came with a small snack...a strange snack with edible flowers and so on. We tried it, and I repeat....weird. Also, unlike the other two companies, it was only the sauces that were divided by meal - the vegetables were loose so I had to look through the recipes to figure out which veggies went with what meal.

And the thing I disliked the most about the ingredients was the pre-packaged stuff. All companies send their vinegar and such in a little container like this, so I didn't mind that. It was the honey in the package like you would find at a crappy restaurant, and the worst - the EGG! Not only was it not an actually egg but it was a poured egg, like you buys in the carton! I didn't love that at all.

Besides all that though, we got to cooking. The recipe we tried was:

Unlike the other companies that have the recipe card as a full 8x10 cardstock this recipe card is small and made of paper. I didn't mind the smaller version, but I didn't like the paper part - as soon as it got wet, it was ruined.

The recipe though was pretty easy to follow and I liked that it mostly instructed you to do things in a way that avoided you waiting around for one thing to cook while something else got cold. Also a first for me was chopping coriander - I'd never done that before!

And, just like before, my kid wanted to help out - which I think it the best part out of all of this!

We cooked the recipe just as it stated and even though there was cabbage ("Mommy, what's that weird red stuff?"), my son was still excited to try it out.

One thing I found about the recipe and the small containers of ingredients was the fact that they weren't pre-measured. We were missing about 1/4 of a tsp of honey when we poured it out of the contained and ended up using all the soy sauce even though the back of the recipe card stated 60 ml (I had assumed it had been pre-measured). As for the egg, I threw out the container and used a fresh egg from my fridge.

At the end of it, the sauce wasn't as "saucy" but thicker than the picture made it seem and there was a little bit too much soy sauce. My son took 2 bites and said he liked it and then about 4 bites later decided he didn't. The rice, however, mixed with some of the sauce was very good. But that's not saying much - I used to mixed Ketchup with my rice! Ha!

MY VERDICT:

Meal Selection: 2/2

I think this is why I was most excited to try Miss Fresh - because their meal selection seemed pretty decent. For example, as I write this now, they have a bunch of meals that look interesting: Shephard's Pie, Cajun Chicken Pasta, Shrimp Fetteccini Alfredo....so not bad. But not exactly "picky eater" friendly. They also only have two "boxes" to choose from -- custom or vegetarian.

Family Friendly: 1/2

Each week, there are about 2-3 meals out of 7 that my picky eaters may eat. And had we not put too much soy sauce in this meal, my whole family probably would have enjoyed it.

Quality of Ingredients: 0/2

Carton eggs???!! 'Nuff said!

Packaging: 1/2

Didn't love the way they packaged things - all the sauces for the meals were packaged together in a plastic bag and then you kind of had to mix and match to find all the ingredients for the meal. Plus - I don't love plastic bags. I also thought it was a little amateur that they just knotted the top of the bag like when you pick up Pho and they have a little plastic bag of bean sprouts and hot sauce...weird.

Taste: 1/2

It was decent - rice is always a winner with me but neither of my picky eaters would eat it, however, it could have been a user error for that one.

Nutrition: 2/2

I don't have much to say about this - had all the food groups - carbs, protein, veggies with iron and fiber....good

Pricing: 2/2:

Miss Fresh is pretty comparable but on the cheaper side than the 4 companies I tried.

Custom box: You have the option here for 2, 3, 4, or 4 recipes at 2, 4 or 6 servings for each recipe. For us, we would order 3 recipes at 2 servings and (without the code) would have cost us $65 for the week. That's $10.99 per serving. You can't switch between plans because, unless you want to do vegetarian, there are no other options. However, you can add some of the vegetarian recipes to your custom box.

TOTAL SCORE: 9/12
