How it Works
Some genealogists charge by the hour for all the research and reporting and some genealogists charge a flat rate for a certain amount of research criteria. Both are effective ways to offer help to clients looking for information on their ancestors and their heritage, but both are pretty vague on the client's side. How do you know that you're getting what you paid for? What if you paid for a certain amount of research but your particular case didn't end up needing that much research? Plus, no matter which you choose, it can end up being quite expensive.
That's why we've broken down the genealogical process into steps, offering you a more customizable way of getting the information you're looking for.
Though we certainly understand the reason for the sometimes-high cost of hiring a professional to help you with your family history, we also understand that anyone - regardless of circumstance - should be able to know where they came from and how they got here. Step 1: Set Your Goal

Step 2: Preparing For Research
The Preliminary Report
A Preliminary Report is to offer clients - as well as ourselves - an idea of how much work will go into researching, analyzing, and writing about your family's history. Preliminary Reports are most beneficial for clients who are looking for multi-generational research, family origin research, and an answer to a specific question.
What A Preliminary Report Entails:

Client must know what their ultimate research goal is prior to beginning

Client provides any and all information they have on the family in question

We take that information and do a 3-hour search to determine what information we can find easily and what information will be difficult to find

Sometimes when a family member has a common name, the analysis portion of the research will require us to very closely scrutinize many records to determine who is who; this will add additional research time to the project

Sometimes someone is just very difficult to find and through this preliminary report, we would get a rough idea of how much work will go into finding that family member
All of these scenarios, plus some others, will factor into the amount of time it could take to reach your ultimate goal after which time we can offer you an estimate of time/cost for this research to be completed.
Cost of a Preliminary Report: $150
Terms of Preliminary Report Cost: Should you choose to continue with the research following the receipt of your Preliminary Report, the $150 will be used as a deposit and will go towards the overall cost of the entire project.
PLEASE NOTE: The Preliminary Report is optional. It is not required in order to complete the research, however, it will result in an inability to offer an estimate of any kind. If your research goal is multi-generational or family of origin, we highly recommend the Preliminary Report

Step 4: Research Begins!
Depending on the ultimate research goal and/or chosen package, delivery of the finished project can be expected anywhere between 4 weeks to 12 weeks (an estimate of the time required for research will be provided prior to finalizing services agreement
Depending on the amount of information provided prior to beginning the research, we may have questions throughout to ensure we are on the right track. We ask that you please respond to these communications as quickly as possible to avoid a delay in research
If you chose an hourly research package, we will provide you with weekly updates to help keep your mind at ease and keep the communication lines open. We are always available for any questions, new information, or concerns at any time throughout the research portion.
